An Evening At The Trevi Fountain

Craig and I were introduced by a friend and neither one of us was looking for a serious relationship. I would be fulfilling a military obligation soon and Craig had just started his law career and was hoping to get into politics. We lived 3 hours away from each so this was working out just fine.

I finished my ER residency and was about to move to Italy because of my Navy obligation but Craig and I had fallen in love despite our attempts to remain level headed and realistic. Now it seemed like the world was trying to keep us apart. First, September 11. I couldn't leave the base in Rhode Island because of the threats and Craig's flight was of course cancelled. I left for Italy just a few days later without seeing Craig. What was worse was that I knew Craig would be re-called to active duty because he is an Airborne Ranger and Green Beret and he speaks Arabic. To make a long story short, Craig managed to get over to Italy though the trip had to be cut short because of his deployment.

We were planning on spending a couple of days in Rome where he flew into before going back to Naples. One night we were walking around trying to find Trevi Fountain. It was beautiful especially at night with the way the marble and water shine in the light. He got down on one knee right in front of the fountain and told me how he would try for the next 50 years to show me how much I was loved by him and even after 50 years he couldn't come close to showing me how much he loved me. Actually I don't remember a lot of the things that he said because I trying so hard not to sob. He then gave me the most beautiful diamond I've ever seen. I said, "Yes, of course I'll marry you". People clapped and took pictures. It was very sweet and romantic. After Craig's 1 year deployment is over he is going to move here to Naples, Italy and put his law and political career on hold a while longer just so he can be here with me. We are planning to marry next summer in Ravello, Italy and in St Charles Missouri, pending anymore world catastophes!
